Jonathan Hoefler started the company as a teenager, initially creating custom typefaces for publications like Rolling Stone, Harper's Bazaar, and The New York Times. The Gotham Story
Gotham, designed for GQ magazine in 2000, became a cultural phenomenon when it was adopted by Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. Its geometric forms with humanist touches have made it ubiquitous in branding, signage, and digital interfaces.
