Linotype is a legendary type foundry with roots dating back to 1886 when Ottmar Mergenthaler invented the Linotype machine, revolutionizing the printing industry. Today, Linotype (now part of Monotype) houses one of the largest collections of typefaces in the world.

History

The Linotype machine transformed newspaper publishing by automating the typesetting process. The company evolved from a machine manufacturer into one of the premier type foundries, commissioning some of the most influential typefaces ever created. In 2006, Linotype was acquired by Monotype, consolidating two giants of the type industry.

Swiss Design Connection

Linotype became synonymous with Swiss typography through its relationship with legendary designers. The company released Helvetica (1957), Univers (1957), and Frutiger (1976)—three typefaces that defined the International Typographic Style and continue to dominate visual communication.
